Tracing Family History: A Blast to the Past

Just like investigating, tracing your family history needs to be factual and accurate. After all, you might end up writing about the wrong family.

However, family histories do not have to be plain and boring. As a family historian, you have to unearth more than just dates and names. You also have to reconstruct their lives, even just snippets or short stories of them that will make your ancestors memorable. Yet, you must avoid romanticizing their stories, although you can add a few anecdotes that will make their lives sound more interesting.

Tracing your family history might sound like an arduous task. However, with perseverance, diligence and faith, you will be able to embark on an adventure that will take you deep into the past and back.

Along the way, you will meet various people, especially relatives who you never knew existed. From them, you can collect memories of your ancestors that can teach you lessons in life.

The first people you have to interview are your parents. If they are not available, you can interview your nearest relative such as your aunt, uncle or grandparent.

If you are an orphan, you can check the local library or local registry for your parents' names and start from there. Adopted children can also ask their foster parents or their foster home for information about themselves.

Aside from interviews and traveling to places for research, science has provided another way that can help you in your search. Through DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid testing, you can trace your ancestry and linkage to other people whom you suspect of being a relative of yours.

The best part is that DNA testing can be used to trace not just paternal links but also maternal ancestry. DNA testing, however, will not give you any specific name of ancestor to whom you are related. It simply is used to prove or disprove claimed family links.

Tracing your family history is an adventure worth undertaking. It will not only be beneficial for yourself, but will also help future generations appreciate and learn more about their past.
