Family History

For most people, there is nothing more important than family. The family, after all, is the basic unit of any society. As a result, most people put emphasis on the importance of knowing their roots or lineage.

Through family histories, people get to know more about their ancestors. A family's history is more than just a collection of names and technical information about a person's descendants. Well-researched family histories contain the biographies of their ancestors.

Family histories were initially made known through oral tradition. Later, these were preserved through writing, either in the form of a book or a database found on the Internet.

Generally, family histories are noted in the form of family trees or pedigree charts, but these trees or charts may be expounded to contain written accounts about the person's personal life. Royalties, for example, have updated and very meticulous family trees. Although autobiographies or biographies of their ancestors are written separately, these provide insight on the lives of the names appearing on the family tress.

Family history requires in-depth research, which usually takes a lot of time. It requires interviewing family members, relatives and friends about the family's past.

Data could also be gathered from the National Registry or from wills. Currently, the Internet also provides various sources where a person could collect information on an ancestor he or she is looking for. However, these databases are often limited to birth and death certificates, marriage contracts and telephone directories that only contain limited information.

Although building a family history appears taxing, there are more reasons to continue the search than not to. For one, family histories are gems that can be passed down from generation to generation. Second, family histories give insight on the trials and triumphs of our ancestors. Their life stories could be inspirational or could help us learn from their mistakes. Lastly, family histories allow us to discover who we are by knowing more about our family's past.

Family histories are more than just fabricated tales about the past of people we hardly know. Rather, these are proof that certain people have lived and left a legacy worth remembering.
